RIMBAUD EXPOSITION THEORY

Believer? Anarchist? Piss taker? Genius?
Ironically, the man who despised labelling, has had more hung on him than any since . . .

“I admire him. Not only because he truly believed he had done all he could for the form, but because he saw no future in it and stuck to his word.”

Baudelaire

Arthur Rimbaud left the genre of poetry a legacy; a poisoned chalice which is still drunk from by all in search of the alternative side of the form. Dead at thirty-seven, having completed all of his works by the age of twenty and having abandoned the genre as a folly, Rimbaud went on to live in Africa before returning to die in France. What remains is myth entangled with truth, lies entangled with hearsay and an enduring portrait of an artist who refused to be hemmed in by invisible or physical parameters.

Paroxysm Press invite you to bring a Rimbaud poem and celebrate the man and his work in this tribute evening – one night in – a season in hell. m.c teri louise kelly.

Some very special reasons to get down there and spend some cash:

First off – anyone who buys two Paroxysm books will receive FREE a Paroxysm stubbie holder (worth $10).

Secondly – this will be only the second Adelaide appearance for the new Paroxysm merch. (see below)

And third – Lisa Dempster from the brilliant Melbourne publisher Vignette Press will be in town – and this will be your first chance in Adelaide to get hold of their new anthology – Death Mook – which features a huge line-up including our own Paroxysm Press publisher, Daniel Watson.

“The Adelaide Zine and DIY Fair has been run annually since 2005, beginning as an independent event before attracting attention and support from the Fringe festival in 2006. Last year’s event featured sixty zine and independent publishers, ranging from members of the Unley City young writers’ group, long standing punk fanzine writers, local poets and artists, members of the Magdalene Community Centre and a vast array of young and emerging writers who have utilised zine publishing as the cheapest and easiest way to produce their work. The Fringe estimated around 1000 visitors over the course of the day.”

3. Paroxysm Press t-shirts, beanies & stubbie holders

Over the years the various Paroxysm Press t-shirts have been very popular and in response to the demand from all you good people we have a new design just released. The latest shirt is black (of course) with ‘paroxysm’ written across the front in the Impact font we use. The back features the amazing poem Jesus Was Wrong from Kelly-Lee Hickey (as appeared in Ten Years of Things that Didn’t Kill Us). $20.

The previously very rare Paroxysm Press stubbie holders (featuring our logo) are also now available to the general public. $10.

And brand new (and of a very high production quality – thanks to our new merch guys) Paroxysm Press beanies! A very modern style of black beanie featuring our logo. These ones really look kick arse! $20.

We’re still working out the logistics re: whether they will be offered for sale on the website or not but if you’re interested send us an email and we’ll let you know how we’re going.

Ten Years of Things That Didn't Kill Us . . .

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

- submissions open -

It’s been a hell of a road. But we’re still here, still standing and still fighting. Our first anthology ‘Paroxysm’ was launched in late 1998. This year will see us mark the TEN YEAR anniversary of that first release. There’s been good years and bad. There’s been near poverty and huge successes. We’ve lost people along the way and gained many more. There’s been illness, death and heartbreak. But every year we grow; every year we’re kicking arse more and more. And frankly we’re just too bull-stubborn to die.

So come join us in this year of celebration – authors old and new. SUBMISSIONS ARE OPEN for our ten year anthology “Ten Years of Things That Didn’t Kill Us”. Use the title as a theme if you like; whether you see it as strength against adversity, or life lived in tragedy. But remember there is no theme as such on this one apart from the fact we want it to be as Paroxysm as hell. Most of you already know what that means – if not grab a copy of one of the books so you know the kind of material we like. There are no length requirements, no limit on number of submissions and its open to all writing – stories, poetry, non-fiction – anything. But a warning people – bring your A-game – the competition will be tougher than ever on this one.

Submissions are open now and close at the end of May.

We’re already sure of Adelaide and Melbourne launches, and we’ll be working on other cities as we put this baby together. I’d also like to welcome the newly gelled Paroxysm ‘crew’, forming the largest editing team to date. Joining myself in the editors chair will be Kami, Kerryn Tredrea, Hop Dac and Shane Jesse Christmass.

Go hard people – show us what you’ve got!

Croak & Grist is coming . . .

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

My serious apologies for delaying the release of the absolute gem of a book Croak & Grist from Shane Jesse Christmass and Hop Dac. I’m just so damned busy with the slam and with a comic I’m contracted to do. Their collection of stories is top-shelf and I’m not gonna screw ‘em around by compromising on editing and lay-out quality at this late stage. But stick with us – its well worth the wait. More on this soon.

Shotgun rolls on . . .

Sunday, August 27th, 2006
  1. Melbourne Thanks
  2. Melbourne Stores
  3. Adelaide Launch
  4. Gig Reminder

1. Melbourne Thanks
Thanks to Kelly-Lee, The Arthouse, the Overload Poetry Festival, Steve Smart, Mess N Noise, DeviantArt and all the various doorbitches, merchbitches, sausage/eggplant cookers, angry band managers, teachers etc who made the Melbourne Shotgun launch such a good time. The readings were excellent (despite occasional drunken background buzz) and sales went better than expected. A special g’day also to the Belfast poets.

2. Melbourne Stores
Both Shotgun and Waste are now in stock at the central Dymocks (Collins St) in Melbourne. Getting on shelf with the major retailers is a pretty big deal so please everyone support us by getting down there and buying a copy.

But don’t forget both Collected Works and Polyester Books for your Paroxysm purchases – both have been very long term supporters of the label.

3. Adelaide Shotgun Launch
The Adelaide Shotgun launch will take place Oct 24th, Tues 6-8, at Hard Boiled (which will then be at its new home @ Higher Ground, Rundle Street).
More details to come.

4.Gig Reminder
And don’t forget:

This Wednesday Aug 30th at SA Writers Centre the first ever Hard Boiled spoken word gig from 7pm.
